We have been working with selecting this famous beefsteak heirloom since 1995. The original Amish seed came from Pennsylvania. This living treasure has beautiful deep pink skins and flesh with outstanding flavour. One of the characteristics of this variety is a condition known as catfacing. The fruit exhibits a lumpy and ridged bottom. Our selection process started in 1997, when some fruit had smoother bottoms. By using these smooth fruit as our seed stock, after another 5 years the catfacing had disappeared, but not that famous Brandywine taste! These indeterminate vines can grow to 8 feet long. The leaves are potato leaf, with smooth, not the pointed indented edges of most varieties today. Potato leaf types have thinner leaf coverage so less pruning is required. The fruit averages 4 inches across, is very meaty and the skins are tender. Fruit ripens in 90 days. Harvest any green fruit at the end of the season. They ripen beautifully indoors out of direct sunlight. We are pleased to offer this seed from our Heirloom Plant program. Highly recommended. Seed packet is 15 to 20 seeds.
