Howard was born on March 11, 1969 in Chicago, Illinois. At 16, he emancipated himself from his parents and at 18, he moved to New York City to pursue an acting career. His first role came on The Cosby Show which he followed with the short-lived CBS sitcom Tall Hopes.

Howard's made his big film break in 1995's Mr. Holland's Opus. In 1999, he appeared in The Best Man and in 2005, he received both Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for his role in Hustle & Flow. In 2007, he starred in Pride, The Hunting Party, The Brave One and then August Rush. In 2008, he made his Broadway debut with Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Howard was married to Lori McCommas for 14 years, but divorced in 2003. They had three children together.
